Popular traditions

As any other town in Spain, fiestas are a way of life for most locals of the city. One of the most important in Mojácar is the Moors and Christians festival. Celebrated the nearest weekend to the 10th of each June, for 3 days, the said festival commemorates the expulsion of the Moors from the region in the reconquista. The entire spectacle is well worth seeing - there are everywhere simulation of the key events in this historical period. Participants dress in elaborate costumes just for the occasion. Every year, the two parties simulate mock battles as egged on by the spectators. As history would attest, the Christians emerge victorious in the mock encounters. These are all accompanied by a haunting background of music and gunpowder explosions.

Other observed traditions:

-San Agustín: Agustín is the patron saint (male) of Mojácar. This fiesta falls on the 28 of August.
-Romería de San Isidro: 15th of May.
-San Juan Hogueras: 24th of July.
-Virgen del Rosario: Rosario is the patron saint (female) of Mojácar.
